What dermal filler is
Dermal filler is a hyaluronic acid gel, a substance your skin already makes. I place it in specific areas of the face to replace support that has been lost with time, so you look refreshed and nobody can quite say why.
The difference between natural and overdone comes down to how much is used, where it goes, and knowing when to stop.
Looking tired, sad or grumpy
Who it suits
The usual trigger is photographs. The face at rest looks flatter, the shadow under the eye is longer, and the jawline is less definite than it was. Jowls can make you look grumpy when you're not.
Midface support goes first, and restoring a small amount of it often does more for how rested you look than treating the lines that were bothering you.
Flattened cheeks
1ml of cheek filler subtly replaces lost volume at the front of the cheek. Results show straight away and last at least two years.
Chin and jawline
Chin filler restores definition to the chin and jawline, and I often use it as part of a jowl treatment. Results last around two years.
Tear troughs
Many under-eye hollows are really lost cheek volume, so I assess both. Where tear trough filler is right, I use Teosyal Redensity II, which also helps with darker pigmentation. Results take about a month and last 18 months to two years.
Marionette lines
The lines from the corners of the mouth that make you look tired, and a bit grumpy. I often use a cannula here for extra comfort.
Nasolabial lines
The lines from the nose to the corners of the mouth. Treated alongside support at the base of the nose, the result is soft and natural.
A reversible treatment
Hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved if ever needed. It's one reason I work with it rather than permanent materials.
On the day
What a filler appointment involves
Filler appointments are 75 minutes, after your consultation.
Assessment and marking
I reassess your face at rest and in movement, confirm the plan with you and mark the areas. Nothing is injected until we've agreed what goes where.
Treatment
The area is cleaned and treated. Most fillers contain local anaesthetic, and numbing cream is available. Most people describe it as pressure rather than pain.
Aftercare and review
You leave with written aftercare, and I see you again at two weeks. Swelling settles over the first week or two, so that's when to judge the result.

Around two years in most areas: cheeks at least two years, chin and jaw around two, tear troughs 18 months to two years. A full-face treatment lasts at least three years.

Most people describe pressure rather than pain. Most fillers contain local anaesthetic, numbing cream is available, and I often use a cannula for extra comfort.

Possibly. Bruising is the most common side effect, particularly around the eyes and mouth. If you have an event coming up, allow two weeks.

Often less than you expect. I work in small amounts and review before adding more, so a first appointment may use a fraction of what you had in mind.
